Given the situation in the Middle East, one would certainly expect a rise in prices at the pump. However, the timing is interesting. It would probably take some time for a barrel of Saudi oil to be placed on a tanker, shipped across the ocean, trucked to a refinery and then trucked to your local gas station.
However, at the first puff of black smoke in the desert, the prices at the pump shot up. Certainly, the gas sitting in the tanks at the gas station shouldn’t have been affected by rising oil prices. That gasoline had been paid for long ago, but the oil companies never miss an opportunity to cash in during a crisis. Amazingly, in our so-called competitive marketplace, the major companies all raised their prices about the same amount and at the same time.
And what kind of an outcry have we heard from our intrepid government representatives — crickets. It’s amazing how those campaign donations tranquilize those officials.Â
