Editor,
I would like to express my support for electing, rather than appointing, several key county offices in San Mateo County: the coroner, the controller-treasurer and the tax collector as well as the sheriff.
These positions exercise significant authority over matters that directly affect the public — ranging from the handling of death investigations, to oversight of public funds, to the collection and safeguarding of taxpayer dollars. In a democratic system, such responsibility should be paired with direct accountability to the voters.
Elections provide transparency, independence and public trust. An elected official answers first to the electorate, not to appointing authorities or internal political dynamics. This independence is particularly important for offices whose duties include auditing, financial oversight and the fair administration of sensitive public functions.
While professional qualifications are essential — and should be clearly stated and evaluated by voters — expertise and democratic accountability are not mutually exclusive. Voters are fully capable of assessing credentials when given clear information and elections encourage public engagement with how these offices operate.
San Mateo County prides itself on civic participation and good governance. Allowing voters to choose who serves in these important roles strengthens public confidence and reinforces the principle that those who wield public power should ultimately answer to the people
