I have learned a lot being a justice studies student at San Jose State University, but taking JS 132 race, gender, inequality and law has really opened my eyes to many issues in the criminal justice system. One thing I recently learned is regarding a piece of legislation called H.R. 5682, also called the First Step Act.
The First Step Act passed the U.S. House of Representatives in May and is now in the hands of the U.S. Senate. This bill is supported by both Democrats and Republicans. One of the goals regarding sentencing prisoners is to rehabilitate them, and that is something that the First Step Act will tackle. If passed by the Senate, this bill would bring much needed support to programs that help prisoners assimilate to life after prison.
The bill would also bring leniency to minimum sentences regarding drug charges, which mainly affect minorities (which make up a big number of the prisoner population in the United States). Female prisoners would not be restrained during and after pregnancy which provides a positive step forward in their health as well as the health of their babies. Though the legislation would only apply to federal prisoners, the First Step Act is a positive step toward improving the criminal justice system. I encourage everyone to learn more about this bill.
