In response to Mr. Postlewaite IV's letter regarding the Oakland City Council's decision mandating bilingual employees; I heartily agree with him. If we are to provide bilingual employees every language spoken should be represented, not just one or two.
My maternal grandparents and my father immigrated to this country from Germany. My grandmother was sent a book to study English by her uncle for the long voyage, so that when she arrived she would be able to help him and his wife in their business. Likewise my grandfather was self-taught and with hard work opened his own business. My father came to the United States as a merchant seaman and decided to remain here, and he learned our language and conducted business in a neighborhood where there were many different languages spoken at home, but people were proud to be able to speak and converse in the language of their new country.
It is time for those who wish to remain in our country and raise their families, and work to learn the language. To know more than one language is helpful, but as Mr. Postlewaite states,
