“Trial by fire.”

It’s a cliché, but Los Angeles has a way of validating clichés — riots, earthquakes and fires are part of life here. One waits for locusts.

Thanks for your guest perspective, Mr. Newton, but I’d be interested in knowing why you’re not addressing the underlying problems from government which led to the magnitude of the destruction. For instance, the lack of water due to allowing 80% of our water to flow out to sea, the lack of building new reservoirs even though there’s money allotted for them, the lack of fire management to remove dead brush, the firing of hundreds of firefighters due to not taking Covid clot shots, the reduction of almost $18 million of the firefighting budget, DEI hires, etc. You’re now claiming the “government should be applauded for their efforts but isn’t this akin to applauding a fireman putting out a fire that they started? We do need one another but what is more obvious is that we need better government.

A bigger question is whether you think, in the near or far future, California government will make changes to their currently dismal water and forest management policies. Personally, I believe you’ll be able to regurgitate this article after the next “big” water or fire catastrophe because nothing much has changed. And let’s not get into the carbon emissions from these fires. Looks like all those EV and fossil-fuel avoidance schemes that purport to reduce carbon emissions have also gone up in smoke. BTW, good news that instead of focusing on the fire, Newsom is holding a special session to get $25 million to fight Trump? We see where his priorities lie. Good luck to fire-prone communities. They’ll need it.
