Balancing the varied needs — whether it be maintaining charm or ensuring a sufficient housing supply — of a community like Burlingame is no small task. But Donna Colson, its current mayor, could teach a class on it. For two terms, the people of Burlingame have been fortunate to have Colson on the council to receive their concerns, hear their wishes and consider their dreams. She is a master at taking input from all and seeing if there is a way to make something happen for the betterment of everyone, while also knowing her role is to make the tough decisions that do just that — even though not everyone will always be pleased.
Burlingame faces challenges like any other city, whether it be ensuring a positive revenue stream, accommodating growth and housing needs, doing its part for the planet and ensuring a happy workforce. Challenges emerge at all times, and it is usually Colson right in the midst of it working hard with a smile on her face gently nudging others to get in there too. She is a good example to all, and Burlingame is lucky to have her in service. This election means she is running to represent District 4, which she assuredly will while continuing her leadership for the entire city.
In District 2, there are four candidates who bring a variety of perspectives but one rises to the top — Desiree Thayer. She has widest breadth and depth of knowledge of the city’s myriad issues and can take them on immediately and with ease. Thayer has a no-nonsense, analytical way of looking at issues and can synthesize and explain them with the knowing ease of an incumbent though she is running for her first term.
Burlingame’s council is in transition, with Andrea Pappajohn running unopposed in District 1 after being named to replace Ricardo Ortiz, who left early. With Colson providing some continuity of leadership and Thayer coming on quickly, the city of Burlingame will be in good hands.
