Gov. Gavin Newsom’s decree that by 2035 all new cars sold in California must be powered by batteries or other zero-emission systems has received a double dose of legal and political support.

Last Friday the U.S. Supreme Court blocked an effort by red states to declare California’s zero-emission mandate unconstitutional. And on Wednesday the outgoing Biden administration’s Environmental Protection Agency granted the state’s request for a new waiver, which it needs to deviate from federal emission standards.

I hope Trump allows the EPA action to stand so California has to deal with another self-inflicted wound. Car sellers from other states would love the additional auto sales to Californians and other states would love the associated sales taxes. And I’m sure auto mechanics in California would love to repair/maintain millions of gas-powered cars for as long as possible. Folks, maybe it’s time to invest in auto salvage yards – the price of replacement parts may increase considerably, along with potential profits. Or invest in an auto reseller as I imagine the price of used cars will rise considerably.
