A 15-year-old girl testified Wednesday that a former Palmdale city councilman plied her with alcoholic drinks and molested her. The girl, identified only as Gloria W., testified that she was molested over an eight-year period when Kevin W. Carney, 49, was friends with her mother. Carney, a former Los Angeles County sheriff's sergeant in Lancaster who investigated child abuse, faces 16 counts of molesting four girls, including Gloria W.
Carney was relieved of duty following his arrest last fall, and has since retired from the Sheriff's Department, prosecutors said.
Under questioning by Deputy District Attorney Rob Dver, Gloria W. described how during one incident Carney gave her tequila and molested her.
"Every time I would put (the drink) down, he would take it and put it to my lips. I was really buzzed," the girl said. "He started trying to feel my breast and I pushed his hand away. I remember he made me masturbate him."
Gloria W. testified that they had sexual intercourse in Oct. 28, 1999, shortly before Carney ran for Palmdale City Council. He won the seat but resigned soon after to fight the molestation charges. In 1997, two of the other girls he allegedly molested, identified in court as Amanda and Lindsey, brought allegations shortly before he ran for Palmdale mayor. He lost the race to the incumbent.
Carney is free on $500,000 bail. He is married with three adult children. He and his family maintain his innocence.
The case is before Superior Court Judge James Chalfant. Carney is represented by attorney Milton Grimes.
Carney faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.
