Wisnom Hardware in San Mateo

Robert James Wisnom, William Wisnom and Robert Bonner opened Wisnom-Bonner Hardware on the corner of Second Avenue and Ellsworth in San Mateo in 1905.

Hammers, nails, screws, light switches, electrical wire, fireplaces, faucets, garden supplies, etc. are all featured at one of the last old-fashioned hardware stores on the Peninsula — the Wisnom Hardware. Everything you could ever want for repair of the home can be found on the two floors of the hardware store that started on First Street and Delaware Avenue in 1982. In addition to the fine line of hardware items the store has a unique wall that pays homage to the last chapter of the building before it became the Wisnom Hardware Store. Hidden behind the maze of shelves that the management use for display of their wares is a wooden wall with unique bronze-colored metal post office boxes that were one used in a post office bonified government post office in either North or South Dakota. Vicki, a sales clerk who has worked at Wisnom since 1982, wasn’t quite sure what state it was for sure but did remember that Mr. Wisnom bought it to dress up an empty wall to a store-room when the store was remodeled before moving into it in 1982. The wooden wall of the post office, with a beautiful wooden door and a sign signifying it is a post office, was needed to memorialize the regional post office that occupied this First and Delaware building that once was a lumber yard for the Wisnom family back in the 1880s. The wall adds a nice touch and a unique feel to the rows and rows of hardware supplies that fill the floor.
