Officers were dispatched to the College of San Mateo on Tuesday on a false call of an active shooter after authorities failed to notify police that training exercises were taking place there, the department said.
Multiple calls came in on Tuesday evening beginning at 5:15 p.m. reporting armed subjects wearing black with rifles and people screaming at the campus.
“SMPD Officers responded immediately, all while making efforts to determine whether the police academy was in session and if this report could perhaps be a training exercise,” the department said.
The academy was not in session, but officers ultimately located several law enforcement agencies conducting a training exercise, San Mateo police said.
“Appropriate notifications had not been made and our agency was not made aware of outside agencies using the campus for training,” SMPD said. “While glad to learn this was not an active threat, our department responded in force and took appropriate actions immediately. We train for these responses regularly and our community should feel we are prepared to respond.”
San Mateo police said the school was carrying out a training with outside law enforcement as part of its emergency medical technician program.
