Amidst the sounds of summer baseball leagues and pick-up basketball games in Burlingame's Washington Park, a group of about 15 people sweated inside the recreation center yesterday trying to find a place for a new community youth center.
With less than a month left before the Teen Center Committee is scheduled to give an update on its progress to the City Council and a final recommendation to the Parks and Recreation Commission, its certainly have their work cut out for them.
There are now a handful of proposals on the table: Create a new facility at or near Burlingame Intermediate School; construct a new facility at Burlingame and Carolan avenues; construct a new facility at the park maintenance yard in Washington Park; rebuild the existing recreation center; or construct a new facility on city-owned lots south of Howard Avenue.
Earlier this year, city officials unveiled plans to construct a new recreation center in Washington Park. The most ambitious scenario entailed a 40,000-square-foot new facility with a 191-space parking garage that would eclipse the adjacent playground and the historical Lion's Club building. Nearby residents reacted and said they did not have enough time to add their input.
As the public debate began to heat up, Mayor Joe Galligan decided to create a Teen Center Committee to reach a consensus.
Through seven meetings facilitated by the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center, the committee has attempted to identify what need the community has for a new or rebuilt recreation center. Burlingame residents have long wanted a center for young people to gather instead of the informal hang-outs such as Starbucks or Burger King on Burlingame Avenue.
But the committee has determined that there are a range of needs in the community
