The second biggest shopping center in San Mateo is struggling to revitalize its dwindling business with new shops after a number of recent closures.
Bridgepointe Shopping Center in the east end of San Mateo is filling its empty storefronts with a Petco and at least one new restaurant, said Claire Chang, director of marketing for Westlake Development, the company that owns Bridgepointe.
"We're looking at the financial strength of the tenant and what really fits with the community," Chang said.
Stores began to withdraw early last year. Zany Brainy was the first to go when its parent company FAO Schwartz closed stores nationwide. Rawlings sports restaurant shut its doors a few months ago after months of dragging sales. Rawlings replaced Scores Legendary Sports Bar and Grill, which closed down after a late night brawl left several people with stab wounds.
Most recently, Cucina Cucina closed down. The Italian cuisine chain restaurant was part of Bridgepointe since its opening in 1997.
Petco is currently remodeling the Zany Brainy building and will open soon, Chang said.
Westlake is currently in talks with a restaurant similar to Rawlings to move into the vacant space next to the Ice Chalet. Westlake is also expecting several interested parties for the vacant Cucina building, Chang said.
Bridgepointe opened in 1997 and replaced the former Fashion Island Shopping Center.
