A different kind of guard pet is up for adoption at the Peninsula Humane Society and SPCA in Burlingame: Seven guinea fowl.
Guinea fowl are known to be excellent guard pets, since they are quick to sound the alarm if strangers appear, according to Buffy Martin Tarbox, spokeswoman for the shelter.
Not only do they act as guard pets, in an interesting feat of multitasking, they also lay eggs, Tarbox said.
The confusion (the official term for a group of guinea fowl) arrived at the shelter as strays, the spokeswoman said. The birds can be housed in setups similar to chicken coops, she said.
Anyone interested in meeting the guinea fowl should call (650) 340-7022. Adoption fees for each guinea fowl will be half off the normal fee. Only those interested in keeping the birds as pets will be allowed to adopt them.
“They are only for people who will commit to keeping them as pets and not to harvest them as meat,” Tarbox said.
