Two people were able to get out of a home in South San Francisco where a standoff on Thursday morning ended when a man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
The standoff prompted a nearby middle school to be placed on secure status during the investigation.
Officers responded at about 8:45 a.m. to a welfare check requested at a home on Nursery Way.
Members of the South San Francisco police crisis negotiations team made contact by phone with someone inside the home and facilitated the exit of two people, and as officers were escorting the pair to safety, they heard two gunshots fired from inside the home, according to police.
A regional SWAT team was asked to respond and went into the home, where they found a man dead inside one of the rooms with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No law enforcement officers fired their weapons during the response, police said.
No other information about the case was immediately released by police.
