Victor C. Tom was sworn in as postmaster of San Mateo on Thursday, the 18th since the office opened in 1857.
Tom started as a part-time mail clerk in San Francisco as an 18-year-old college student, and worked with Carol Conroy. Tom now replaces Conroy as the San Mateo postmaster, and will lead 280 employees and oversee more than 418,000 pieces of mail daily.
Conroy, now the San Diego postmaster, said she was pleased with Tom's appointment.
"Aside from being a chronic worry wart and sometimes cranky, he has old-fashioned postmaster values" of taking care of employees and customers, Conroy said of Tom.
Tom thanked his co-workers and family for their support.
"I'm proud to be part of an organization that has a direct impact on the people we serve," Tom said.
