SAN JOSE -- More than 5,000 anti-war demonstrators took to the streets in downtown San Jose on Saturday in what organizers say was the largest protest in the South Bay city since marches during the Gulf War in 1991.
Thousands walked down Santa Clara Street, converging on Cesar Chavez Plaza to listen to speeches by community leaders, including Rep. Mike Honda, D-San Jose, Santa Clara County Supervisor Blanca Alvarado and Helal Omeira of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, all of whom addressed a
united opposition to potential war with Iraq and the local impacts a war could have.
About 40 Bay Area and national organizations participated in bringing the protest together on a day when similar marches drew millions in world capitals, one day before a planned demonstration in San Francisco.<
