The Redwood City Police Department opened a new police substation at Sequoia Station allowing for quicker response times, increasing police visibility and improving safety in the shopping center and major transit area.
On Thursday, Lt. Jeff Clements, Police Chief Kristina Bell, city officials and property owner Deke Hunter cut a ceremonial ribbon to mark the grand opening of the new facility. At 1035 El Camino Real in Redwood City, the substation is located across the driveway from See’s Candies and near CVS/pharmacy in the shopping mall.
“Sequoia Station is a unique property,” Clements said. “It sits right in the heart of Redwood City and in many ways the heart of the Peninsula.”
The new substation is a “significant investment” in public safety and a part of the ongoing public and private partnership in Redwood City, Bell said.
“More than just brick and mortar, this substation symbolizes our commitment to be present, approachable and engaged,” Bell said.
The substation will not be staffed 24/7 and is not open to the public, except for the front lobby area where officers may meet with residents. It will primarily be used by officers to complete reports, meet with community members and allow for quicker response times to the densely populated and high-traffic area.
The substation will also increase public perception of safety, fostering a sense of safety for visitors and businesses at Sequoia Station, Redwood City Mayor Elmer Martínez Saballos said.
“People love to see our officers when they’re walking around downtown,” Martínez Saballos said. “Community trust is built through those little interactions we have with our PD.”
The shopping center, and nearby train and bus stations, are a frequent location where police officers respond to calls. The hope is for the substation to enhance security in the area.
