Sen. Alex Padilla is pushed out of the room as Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem holds a news conference regarding the recent protests in Los Angeles.
“I am Sen. Alex Padilla. I have questions for the secretary,” Padilla is seen yelling on a now-viral video as Noem continues to discuss the anti-deportation protests occurring in Los Angeles.
“We know if this can happen to Sen. Padilla, it certainly can happen to any American,” U.S. Rep. Sam Liccardo, D-San Jose, said. “We’re seeing that today with the deportation of American children and the arrests, the unconstitutional arrests, of many members of our community.”
Democratic U.S. Senator Alex Padilla was forcibly removed from a press conference being held by Homeland Security Kristi Noem on the ongoing protests in Los Angeles.
The Trump administration has been escalating its deportation efforts in recent weeks, targeting workplaces and sending in California’s National Guard against objections of state leadership to quell protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions in Los Angeles.
Padilla attended Noem’s press conference “to hear what she had to say” after questions around the Trump administration’s increasingly aggressive immigration actions have gone unanswered, he told reporters after the incident.
In a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, the Department of Homeland Security said Padilla did not identify himself properly and “lunged” toward Noem.
“@SecretService thought he was an attacker and officers acted appropriately,” the statement read.

Liccardo dismissed that sentiment wholeheartedly and said that Padilla was “the most recognizable human being in that building.”
“Quite simply, they are lying,” he said. “I think it’s important for the media to call them out on their lies, because this is how authoritarian regimes behave. They commit this kind of violent silencing of dissent and then pretend it away.”
Full-throated condemnation of the incident has come from every corner of the Democratic Party in the hours after the removal and handcuffing, including from U.S. Rep. Kevin Mullin, D-South San Francisco, who likened the Trump administration’s actions to “a wannabe dictatorship.”
“It’s utterly shameful to forcibly remove a United States senator from a press conference for simply asking a question. President Trump’s administration has devolved into a wannabe dictatorship,” he said in a statement. “Sen. Padilla is a member of Congress who has every right to question the administration’s chaotic and inhumane actions.”
U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff, who also represents California in the U.S. Senate, delivered remarks on the floor after the incident asking fellow lawmakers to step across party lines and condemn what had happened to Padilla.
“We ask, ‘How do you lose a democracy? How does one lose a democracy?’ This is how you lose a democracy, actions like today,” he said. “Will this be roundly condemned? Will this be roundly condemned or somehow will we just fall down some partisan line again and see another leap towards autocracy in this country?”
State Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, put it even more bluntly.
“Anyone who continues to doubt whether this is fascism is living in an alternate reality,” he said in a statement. “We must mobilize and put a stop to this frontal assault on our democracy and our most basic liberties.”
In what appears to be a nearly scripted reality show scene, Padilla had to work very hard to make Noem look like the reasonable one. Both look like jerks. Being elected does not give one license to act the way he did at her press conference. He had no right to interrupt her and everyone in the room knows that if you make an aggressive move against a protected person, you are likely not going to care for the result. That said, she can't be believed, either. Spare me the outrage here. Start acting like adults - both of you.
Without condoning what Padilla did, his actions are centuries old. But dragging him to the floor in handcuffs are not. This is the slippery slope that leads to something far more dangerous.
Exactly who is outraged? He is a bully and created the political spectacle. If he had questions he could have posed those through established channels. The man handling was unnecessary and degrading though. Did he ever ask any questions when the prior HMS Secretary claimed that the border was secure? No sir, he knows where his base is and felt comfortable confronting her. It just backfired, that's all. Another cheap, political hack, that is all he is.
Poor Mr. Padilla. I posit Mr. Padilla was feeling left out of the spotlight and is jealous at the amount of Newsom’s and Bass’s publicity so he decided on this stunt to make some news and get his 15 minutes of fame. Why else would Padilla skip starting at first base for the Democrats in the Congressional Baseball Game and fly back from DC to California? TBH, contrary to Mr. Liccardo’s assertion that Padilla is the most recognizable person in the building I didn’t realize who Mr. Padilla was and definitely couldn’t recognize him. I’d bet if Padilla was standing alone or in a crowd, just about all Californians and the other 8+ billion plus people in the world wouldn’t recognize him, even after his embarrassing stunt.
And about the assertion that Padilla is claiming to have identified himself by yelling out, he is “Alex Padilla”? It means nothing. Padilla could have claimed, “I am Batman” and he would likely receive the same treatment, especially as he is advancing to the podium and resisting law enforcement. Kudos to the officers keeping Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem safe. The sad thing is…this may be Mr. Padilla’s only accomplishment, albeit dubious.
Meanwhile, as performative political acts attempt to manufacture outrage (failing) and lead headlines, continued raids and deportation activities continue across our lands. And of particular importance to California, Trump signed legislation to reverse California’s ill-advised electric car mandate. Not as exciting as political theatre, apparently.
Thanks for the reminder about the Congressional Baseball game, I remember watching that when I was an intern in DC during college. Looks like the Dems sucked as badly as last year and as they do in general, Republicans destroyed them. Baseball is a great metaphor for life.
