The Midpeninsula Open Space District accepted draft plans to extend its boundaries by 140,000 acres to the San Mateo County Coast at its Wednesday night meeting.
The move has the potential to nearly quadruple its current 50,000-acre purview over 26 open space preserves from San Mateo to Santa Clara counties. However, spokesperson Kristi Webb said the plan will only include approximately 2,000 acres within the next five years.
By annexing coastal land, the open space district will be able to preserve and manage land as open space when it is purchased by land trusts such as the Peninsula Open Space Trust.
The board's action begins the public review period of the draft program environmental impact report. That review period will end Aug. 2.<
