Road closures around the Broadway area of Burlingame are continuing while haz mat crews contend with a petroleum product that has entered an underground utility vault at a gas station on the northwest corner of the intersection with California Drive.
The petroleum product is from a third-party source, not Pacific Gas and Electric and is intruding into electrical vaults. Outages began Tuesday and the substance was detected then. A hazardous material crew contracted by PG&E has been on site since Wednesday and is continuing to remove the petroleum product as it enters the vault. PG&E is remaining on site and is supporting the city, county and state to determine the source.
Road closures around the area are continuing through today. The closures include eastbound Broadway at El Camino Real, northbound California Drive at Carmelita Avenue, westbound Broadway at Carolan Avenue and southbound California Drive at Lincoln Avenue.
All businesses have power again on Broadway, but it is through 14 generators installed by PG&E that will be in use continuously to help minimize service disruptions, according to the utility.
The petroleum product is being tested to learn more about it, according to PG&E.
The gas station is A&A Gas & Mart at 1100 Broadway.
The intersection had separate trouble over the weekend when the Caltrain gate was stuck down for about 10 hours Saturday.
