REDWOOD CITY -- Napster Inc. has struck an online distribution partnership with Edel Music AG, a European independent music label, effective immediately.
Hamburg, Germany-based Edel will make its artists' recordings available for download to Napster's registered users, the companies announced Tuesday.
The label also will advise Napster about the concerns of artists, songwriters and record and publishing companies.
Napster continues to defend itself in a copyright infringement suit filed against it by the recording industry. Both sides await an opinion from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on a preliminary injunction against Napster that was stayed in July.
In October, Bertelsmann announced that it was working with Internet start-up Napster. Bertelsmann agreed to lend Napster money to develop a secure membership-based music distribution system that will guarantee payments to artists. Bertelsmann said it would drop its lawsuit against Napster once the system was in place.
