San Mateo Police officers arrested a 17-year-old boy on Thursday at the unit block of W. 25th Ave. after responding to a report of several people in a roadway, with one carrying a gun, according to a Friday press release.
The group allegedly ran from police officers when they arrived at the scene, but police say they detained the 17-year-old Daly City resident after a foot pursuit.
Police allege the boy had a handgun without a serial number, or a “ghost gun,” with him. “Ghost gun” refers to firearms that can be made at home from fabricated parts or unregistered parts that can be purchased without a background check.
The 17-year-old was on probation for a previous robbery conviction at the time of his arrest, after which he was booked into Hillcrest Juvenile Hall after his arrest.
The 17-year-old is facing allegations of failure to obey a juvenile court order, possession of a concealed firearm with a prior felony conviction, possession of a firearm as a felon and possession of a firearm as a minor.
Firearms must have a serial number and be registered with the state to be considered legal in California. Californians are restricted from buying handguns until the age of 21 and from buying rifles until 18. Possession of firearms by minors is only allowed in California under specific conditions with direct oversight by at least one parent, or by another adult with signed parental permission.
