The party continues for the year-long 100th birthday celebration of Mercy High School Burlingame’s Kohl Mansion.
Friends, neighbors and community members are invited to a birthday party on the green this Sunday. A couple hundred people are expected to come out to the event that includes live music from West Bay Community Band, mansion tours by Catherine Wilkinson and a vintage car show with cars from the early 1900s provided by Eric G. Lundquist and the Richard Murray families.
“I’m hoping a lot of alumni will come,” said Kohl Mansion Director Terri Baldocchi. “It’s a community event to showcase the campus and Kohl mansion, its original estate.”
The day will begin with a proclamation by Mayor Michael Brownrigg and other city officials. There will also be ceremonial birthday cake from Studio Cake that city officials will cut after the 60-piece band will sing “Happy Birthday.”
The 63-room Kohl Mansion, built between 1912 and 1914, has been in the process of undergoing restorations. This past month, the roof of the mansion was redone and slates from the old mansion roof will be sold as commemorative gifts. Other commemorative gifts for sale include wine, Prosecco, bookmarks, ornaments and T-shirts.
The mansion was built by Charles Fredrick “Freddie” Kohl for his wife Bessie. After his death in 1921, the mansion was sold to the Sisters of Mercy for $230,000. Kohl family members will dress up in costume from that era as Freddie, Bessie, the maid and others, with participation from the Burlingame Historical Society.
“It’s pretty amazing in how it all started as a private home,” Dianne Devin, associate director of events at the Kohl Mansion, previously said. “It’s developed into an incredible high school and a venue for corporate events and parties. It’s a big celebration for all of us on campus.”
After purchasing the home, the Sisters of Mercy used the mansion as a convent and a motherhouse until 1931 when they opened Mercy High School for Girls. A classroom wing was eventually added and additional expansion projects followed.
In addition to the music and cake, there will be a photo booth and sound by Verducci Entertainment.
More events happening at Mercy this year include the 10th Annual Café de Kohl, 5 p.m.-9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8. The mansion will be lit up in 1914-style for the holiday event that will include a light supper, holiday spirits, entertainment and holiday-themed boutique shopping. Registration is required. There will also be the Grand Finale 100th Anniversary Concert Sunday, Dec. 14. It will feature John Santos Sextet and the VNote Ensemble. Registration is required and tickets are available after Oct. 30.
The birthday party runs from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3 at the Kohl Mansion, 2750 Adeline Drive in Burlingame. No registration is needed for the event.
