A 67-year-old Hayward man found dead outside the Half Moon Bay substation Wednesday afternoon was identified as Frederick Carl Bittikofer by the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office.
San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies responded to the sound of a single gunshot at 12:45 p.m. Paramedics were unable to resuscitate Bittikofer, who suffered a gunshot wound, said San Mateo County Sheriff’s Detective Rosemerry Blankswade, adding that a gun was recovered from the scene.
The official cause of death is still under investigation.
This is the third shooting in Half Moon Bay in the last month, but Blankswade said it’s being investigated as an isolated incident.
Gilberto Martin Jr. Rodriguez, 53, was found dead at Gray Whale Cove on Feb. 14 after suffering gun shot wounds and other traumatic injuries. His death is being investigated as a homicide. And an adult woman who had been shot once in the head was found on Poplar Avenue on Feb. 22 and was last reported to be in critical condition. Officials are still investigating whether the gunshot wound was self-inflicted or not.
