A man convicted of first-degree murder for fatally shooting 31-year-old Christopher Puckett in June 2016 was sentenced to 50-years-to-life in prison Monday in a San Mateo County courtroom.
Lionel Jericho McCoy Jr., 25, was found guilty in December 2018 after a 26-day jury trial, prosecutors said.
McCoy and another man approached Puckett on the 2400 block of Illinois Street in East Palo Alto around 10 p.m. June 10, 2016.
They got into an argument, which escalated to a physical struggle on the ground. When McCoy got up, he pulled a handgun and fatally shot Puckett.
McCoy had prior felony strike convictions, and one of the related charges against him in this case was being a felon in possession of a firearm.
In addition to at least a half-century of prison time, the 25-year-old has also been sentenced to pay $7,274 in restitution.
McCoy’s defense attorney, Savas Loukedis, didn’t respond to requests for comment.
