A man convicted of strangling a British biotech executive who was going to testify against him in a sexual assault trial was sentenced to life in prison Monday.

A jury in San Diego County Superior Court convicted Frediani on Jan. 29 of murdering of Helena Greenwood, 35, in 1985 outside her home in Del Mar.
Prosecutors said Frediani killed Greenwood, an executive at a biotech firm specializing in DNA research, to prevent her from testifying that he had sexually assaulted her a year earlier when she was living in Atherton, a San Francisco suburb. Frediani served three years of a six-year sentence for the sexual assault. Though Frediani was suspected in the killing, he wasn't arrested until late 1999 when advances in DNA technology allowed investigators to extract a sample from Greenwood's clothing that could be tested. His attorney, David Bartick, said Monday he will appeal the verdict. The defense was not permitted by the judge to introduce evidence that pointed to another suspect, the lawyer said.<
