A one-alarm fire in a wall separating two homes in South San Francisco Sunday caused about $90,000 in damage and displaced two families, according to a fire spokesman.
Investigators believe the small blaze may have started Friday night when residents of 125 A St. had a fire in their fireplace, according to South San Francisco fire Capt. Chris Campagna.
However, the problem didn’t arise until shortly after noon Sunday when next-door neighbors at 129 A St. "smelled and saw smoke in their home’’ and called 911, Campagna said.
"They went outside and the neighbors at 125 had smoke in their home also,’’ he said.
Firefighters responded and doused the blaze, which had spread to a garage. While the fire was relatively small, residents of both homes were displaced because of "extensive overhaul’’ that was performed to ensure that the fire was completely out.
"We had to actually take apart the fireplace, take all the bricks out, and remove the wall that’s between both structures,’’ Campagna said.
No injuries were reported in connection with the blaze, but Campagna said the American Red Cross was called to assist four adults and five children who were displaced by the fire.
