Aster Legesse and Giuliano Polano, owners of neighborhood business Cafe Capuchino, have experienced an outpouring of support from the Burlingame community since receiving the news that they’d need to vacate their existing storefront by the end of August.
A fundraiser started for the couple by neighboring business owner Eric Liittschwager — whose own next-door establishment, raw vegan food spot Que SeRaw SeRaw, is also being forced out — has now generated over $30,000.
“We don’t expect that,” Legesse said. “Everything comes with all the community help, and we are very blessed — very, very blessed — to be here in this area, and the support is amazing. I was shocked when I saw $30,000.”
Both businesses have yet to find new storefronts to relocate to after receiving notice at the beginning of July that the new owner, Jd Capuchino Properties LLC, will be conducting major renovations and they’d be required to move. There is also a business listed under the same ownership for Jd 1399 Broadway LLC, where Sequoia Foods recently operated and Earthbeam health food store operated prior.
Even with the additional money raised, rents in the nearby area remain high, Legesse said, noting the pair would love to relocate the business — which has operated at its current location since 1994 — if financial constraints allow.
“If we found a [lesser] rent … we would love to work with this community, because they support us a lot, and we want to support them together,” she said.
Que SeRaw SeRaw also hasn’t found a new storefront at which to reopen, Liittschwager said. He’s open to a new location within San Mateo County, including as far away as San Carlos or Half Moon Bay.
Liittschwager said he’s thrilled and surprised with the support that Cafe Capuchino is receiving, potentially attributing it to Legesse and Polano’s warm ownership style and community frustration with local mom-and-pop businesses being forced to close down nationwide.
“Maybe it’s something that people see happening all across the country, and people feel bad about those kinds of things happening,” he said.
The businesses are co-hosting a farewell party 1 p.m. Aug. 23, at their respective stores, and community members are welcome to attend.
