Five years after a San Francisco man stole more than $6,000 from two banks in Millbrae and Burlingame, he received an 11-year prison sentence on convictions of felony robbery Friday, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
Reginald Jones, 67, allegedly apologized and said he didn’t mean any harm when he addressed Judge Stephanie Garratt Friday. His defense attorney allegedly said his client has had low self-esteem, was struggling with a drug addiction at the time of the robberies and skipped school when he was a child, according to prosecutors.
Though Garratt allegedly said she recognized all that Jones went through, she said Jones had not said anything that could be an excuse for putting a gun in someone’s face and demanding money from them, according to prosecutors.
Jones was arrested Feb. 20, 2014, after surveillance footage at the two banks he robbed and DNA recovered on a fake gun used in one of the robberies were connected to his profile on a federal DNA database, according to prosecutors previously.
On Jan. 10, 2014, Jones is believed to have robbed a Chase Bank on El Camino Real in Millbrae with a demand note and a fake gun he later discarded at a nearby gas station, escaping with $4,800. On Feb. 14, 2014, Jones stole $1,568 from a Bank of the West on Park Road in Burlingame with a demand note, according to prosecutors previously.

Video footage obtained at a Burlingame Safeway Jones visited an hour before the Feb. 14, 2014, robbery matched surveillance footage taken at the two banks. When Jones was arrested, he was found with a Safeway card he was filmed using at the grocery store, according to prosecutors.
In July of 2014, Jones’ defense attorney expressed a doubt as to his competency and two doctors later found him incompetent to stand trial, according to prosecutors.
District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe noted Jones has two prior robbery convictions dating back to 1983 and another robbery conviction in 2008, along with several other felony convictions, including burglaries, care thefts and possession of stolen property. Wagstaffe said he felt Garratt’s sentence was appropriate for someone with as long a record as Jones.
“For repeat violent offenders, we have to lock them up,” he said. “We can’t simply cuddle them.”
In custody on $750,000 bail, Jones is expected to receive significant credit for time served, according to prosecutors.
Jones’ defense attorney Jonathan McDougall could not be immediately reached for comment.
