A Hillsborough man was arrested Monday evening after allegedly trying to steal a cellphone from someone walking at Coyote Point Park, according to police.
At about 7:15 p.m., police received a 911 call saying a man was chasing someone near the park at 1601 Coyote Point Drive. Arriving officers found the victim who was being chased. He said a man with a pistol in his waistband of his pants demanded his cellphone but he was able to distract him and run toward the park, according to police.
The suspect chased the victim as he ran and could not catch up. The suspect then got into a nearby white SUV and left the scene. Officers were able to get a license plate number from a person who witnessed the incident. Officers searched the area for the white SUV and found the car parked in front of Target at the Bridgepointe Shopping Center, according to police.
The car was unoccupied and officers waited for the suspect to return to his vehicle. The man, identified as Michael Bruni, 33, was safely detained when he returned to the vehicle. A search of the white SUV was completed, and a BB gun was found on the passenger floorboard that resembled a Glock handgun. Narcotic paraphernalia was also found inside the vehicle. Officers also learned Bruni was on bail for a previous arrest. Bruni was arrested and book into San Mateo County Jail on multiple charges, according to police.
