An intoxicated Moss Beach man assaulted two roommates with a barbecue and a flower pot before yanking the tail feathers from Mango, one victim's pet parrot, and trying to stomp the animal to death, prosecutors said yesterday.
Grady Powless, 48, pleaded not guilty yesterday to three counts of assault with deadly weapon, one count of vandalism and one felony count of cruelty to another person's animal. He didn't waive his right to a speedy trial and returns to court May 16 for a preliminary hearing.
Investigators are still sorting out the exact details of the case, Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said, and the motive in the attacks is not yet known.
Powless lives in a house with the two male victims. On May 2, the first victim - who has no legs - heard a crash and said he saw Powless standing next to his car with the windshield smashed in. The victim returned to watching television until Powless entered the room and kicked the man in the groin.
The victim, using a walker, went outside where Powless reportedly attacked him with both a barbecue and a flower pot.
Another man, carrying his pet parrot, Mango, attempted to intervene but Powless hit him with the barbecue, Wagstaffe said.
Powless then reportedly grabbed Mango, yanked out roughly 30 tail feathers, threw him to the ground and tried to stomp on the bird. The owner pushed Powless out of the way to save Mango.
