SAN FRANCISCO OPERA PRESENTS WEST COAST PREMIERE OF JAKE HEGGIE AND GENE SCHEER’S “IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE.” The film of “It’s a Wonderful Life” starring James Stewart, Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore is a holiday classic. On Christmas Eve, George Bailey is contemplating suicide until the angel Clarence helps George see the positive impact of his life on others, thereby restoring his will to live. San Francisco Opera now presents the West Coast premiere of “It’s a Wonderful Life” by composer Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer, a full-scale operatic retelling of this touching story of second chances and the importance of each human life. Sung in English with English supertitles, each presentation of “It’s a Wonderful Life” features a Pre-Opera Talk with San Francisco Opera Dramaturg Dr. Clifford “Kip” Cranna interviewing Heggie and Scheer. Beginning 55 minutes prior to curtain, Pre-Opera Talks are open to tickets holders for the corresponding performance.
TICKET INFORMATION. Performances are scheduled for Nov. 24 (2 p.m.), Nov. 25 (2 p.m.), Nov. 29 (7:30 p.m.), Dec. 1 (7:30 p.m.), Dec. 4 (7:30 p.m.), Dec. 7 (7:30 p.m.) and Dec. 9 (2 p.m.). The San Francisco Symphony’s 2018-19 Music for Families series kicks off Dec 1 at Davies Symphony Hall with Superheroes and Villains. Conductor Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser leads an exploration of history’s most heroic music — from classics of operatic and orchestral repertoire to contemporary Hollywood hits, with excerpts from Black Panther, Superman, The Avengers, The Magic Flute and Die Walküre. Guests are invited to wear costumes and enjoy lobby activities before, during and after the performances, including coloring stations, instrument petting zoos, photo stations and piano mats. Part performance and part family outing, the Music for Families series consists of matinee concerts designed to spark the imagination of the whole family through an exploration of different aspects of the orchestra and its repertoire.
