Flower-covered floats, marching bands and equestrian units celebrated the New Year as the 134th Rose Parade slipped through a gap in California's siege of drenching storms. Pasadena's annual floral spectacle offered the optimistic theme of "Turning the Corner" for 2023 and former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords of Arizona, who survived being shot in 2011, served as grand marshal on Monday. The parade is held on Jan. 2 when New Year's Day falls on a Sunday. Rain has rarely fallen on the parade, but this year it came close. Downpours pounded Southern California over the weekend and rain was expected to return by Monday evening.

"The Avengers" star Jeremy Renner remains in critical condition while being treated for serious injuries that happened while he was plowing snow. Authorities in Reno, Nevada, and the actor's representative have not said how Sunday's accident occurred or the extent of Renner's injuries. The Washoe County Sheriff's Office says Renner had to be airlifted to a hospital and that no one else was hurt in the accident. Renner plays Hawkeye in the superhero Avengers squad in Marvel's sprawling movie and television universe. The 51-year-old actor scored back-to-back Oscar nominations for "The Hurt Locker" and "The Town" in 2010 and 2011.

Barbara Walters, a pioneer as TV news' first woman superstar, has died. She was 93. That's according to ABC News. Her cause of death was not immediately known. Other details, such as where she died, were not immediately released. Walters made headlines in 1976 as the first female network news anchor, with an unprecedented $1 million annual salary. During more than three decades at ABC, and before that at NBC, Walters' exclusive interviews with the famous and powerful brought her celebrity status that ranked. As a highly successful side venture, she created and appeared on a daytime ABC talk show, "The View," until 2014.
