Not Greek to them. Scholars question Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey'
NEW YORK (AP) — Greek translator Emily Wilson finds the release of Christopher Nolan's film "The Odyssey" both gratifying and unsatisfying. Her 2017 translation of Homer's epic has surged in popularity. Nolan even cited her work as inspiration for the film opening this weekend. However, Wilson feels the movie misses essential themes. She appreciates the increased interest in "The Odyssey" but criticizes the film's omissions and changes. Fellow translator Daniel Mendelsohn also notes Nolan's transformation of Odysseus into a tormented protagonist. Despite her critiques, Wilson recommends seeing the film in theaters for its thought-provoking elements.
Nolan’s 'The Odyssey' storms the box office with a $264.1 million global debut
NEW YORK (AP) — Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” launched with an estimated $124.5 million in domestic ticket sales and another $139.6 million from overseas, even better than the filmmaker's “Oppenheimer” debut. The weekend tally marked Nolan's best opening since “The Dark Knight Rises” in 2012. Few filmmakers alive could pull off such a starry, big-budget adaptation of Homer’s epic poem. But in a Hollywood where intellectual property rights rule most hits, Nolan turned one of the world’s oldest works of literature into an unlikely summer blockbuster. By comparison, The Walt Disney Co.’s “Moana” landed in a distant second place with $19 million in its third box office weekend.

Movie Review: In Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey,' an ancient epic is reborn
The authorship of Homer's epic poem, dated to the 7th or 8th century BC, is complex. But no one could question the maker of Christopher Nolan's “The Odyssey,” an earthy, existential epic that ravishingly melds the storytelling of antiquity with contemporary IMAX-sized bravado. “The Odyssey” is rarely not transfixing, and it’s a ripping adventure story, besides. At the least, it’s the definitive big-screen adaptation of one of the oldest tales of humankind. Nolan’s first film shot entirely with IMAX cameras doesn’t skimp on grandiosity, but it works surprisingly well as a simpler, human-sized tale.
License revoked for boarding school in Utah where Paris Hilton says she was abused as a teen
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah revoked another campus license on Friday for the boarding school where Paris Hilton said she was abused as a teenager. The announcement Friday marks a major victory in the hotel heiress’ yearslong effort to get the school shut down. The Utah Department of Health and Human Services’ decision cites a multitude of noncompliance citations in 2026 for the Provo Canyon School’s Provo campus, including not protecting “a client from potential harm or acts of violence." The school’s director of business development says they do not agree with the decision. Earlier this month, the state revoked the license for the school's other campus in Utah.

To air or not to air? Nation's TV networks struggle to find the right balance for Trump speech
To air or not to air? The nation’s TV networks and their news operations spent the hours leading up to President Donald Trump’s address Thursday night debating how to cover it. They were struggling to balance delivering the news with handing over their airwaves to potential falsehoods about the 2020 elections. The dilemma took place against a backdrop of deep tension between the media and a president working to exert control over it by whatever means he can. Even in his speech itself, Trump excoriated networks that chose not to carry it live. He said “NBC and ABC fake news” avoided it and threatened consequences, using the presidential pulpit to suggest they should be sanctioned for their editorial decisions.
