Serra dominated St. Ignatius in the final regular-season game of the year, beating the Wildcats 35-21 Saturday afternoon in San Mateo.
Serra (4-2 WCAL, 8-2 overall) ran the ball effectively, gaining 335 total rushing yards. The Padres took possession of the ball and the line of scrimmage as their lineman paved the way for 10 straight running plays, the final being an 11-yard run by Doug Hansen for Serra's first touchdown of the game. Hansen ran 16 times for 96 yards and three Serra touchdowns.
St. Ignatius' second drive proved to have the same dismal outcome as the first as Wildcats went three-and-out yet again. Serra took the field and once more tore up the turf with the running game which opened with a beautiful 36-yard connection between quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and receiver Edward Berry that moved the Padres to the Wildcats' 1-yard line. On the next play, Masoli called his own number and ran it in for the score putting Serra up 14-0 late in the first quarter.
The second quarter started much brighter for St. Ignatius when Zac Lee found receiver Matt Smith for a 6-yard scoring pass, cutting the Wildcats deficit to 14-7 on the first play of the quarter. Lee passed for 146 yards on 21 attempts, but committed a costly interception that would result in a Serra touchdown.
Serra would get another trip to the end zone on the back of Hansen as he rumbled 25 yards for the score pushing Serra's lead to 21-7.
The Padres started the second half with the ball and were charging down the field to another inevitable score when Lopeti Taufoou fumbled the ball, which was recovered by St. Ignatius.
S.I. held the ball for three plays before Serra linebacker Anthony Sanchez picked off a Lee pass. The Padres wasted no time. On the fourth play of the drive, Lopeti Taufoou took a handoff and carried it nine yards for the touchdown making it 28-7. St. Ignatius finally scored on a 3-yard run by DiMarko Hoskins setting the score at 28-14 late in the third quarter.
Serra's Hansen would finish one more long drive with a 15-yard trick play that went around left end for a touchdown pushing the lead to 35-14. St. Ignatius found paydirt again when Hoskins again ran three yards into the end zone to make it a 35-21 ball game. Serra would grind out the clock and take a knee inside S.I.'s 10-yard line to end the game.
