The Serra Padres made the trip to Bellflower this season for their third matchup in four years with national power St. John Bosco. The Braves, again, rolled to a lopsided win.
Bosco (4-0) claimed its fourth straight win to start the season, 42-0, over the winless Padres. It is the second time in recent history the Braves have shut out Serra, the first time coming on the 2022 CIF Open Division State Championship Bowl stage. The two teams met last season in San Mateo, with the Padres falling 56-16 at Freitas Field.
Former Serra offensive coordinator Steven Lo is now in his eighth season as Bosco’s OC, and his sophomore quarterback Koa Malau’ulu led the way. After the Padres kept Bosco off the scoreboard in the first quarter, Malau’ulu went to work on the Braves’ 28-point second. The sophomore finished 12-of-15 passing for 205 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for a third.
Serra gained just 89 total yards of offense. Sophomore quarterback Caleb Bandel was 6-of-8 passing for 35 yards. Junior safety Jeovanni Henley led the defense with eight tackles, including one sack.
The loss closes out Serra’s challenging non-league slate. After a bye week, the Padres open West Catholic Athletic League play Saturday, Sept. 27, at Valley Christian-San Jose at 6 p.m.
