Menlo boys’ lacrosse came roaring out of halftime, but dropped a 10-7 decision to host St. Francis in a CCS quarterfinal match Friday.
The Knights (5-11) close the season as the fifth seed in CCS Division I and finished fifth in the tough West Catholic Athletic League.
After tying the fourth-seeded Lancers (13-5) 1-1 in first period, Menlo fell behind 5-1 early third quarter. Sophomore Palmer Riley started the charge on his first of three goals five minutes into the third quarter. Menlo’s Caden Chock, also a sophomore, converted on a transition goal then added another three minutes later to close the gap to 6-4.
Riley scores on a Chock assist and the Knights pulled to within a goal with 2:40 left in the third quarter as the Knights defense held the Lancers in check. Menlo finished the five-goal third with junior Henry Wernikoff delivering a goal with four seconds left and the Knights trailing by a goal.
Riley finished with a hat trick and three ground balls. Benjamin Chock, Caden’s triplet brother, had 11 saves and three ground balls. Wernikoff added two goals and one assist. Caden Chock 2 goals, 2 assists and three ground balls. Jacob Chock picked up three ground balls and senior Beckett Knuff had four takeaways.
In other CCS lacrosse action, No. 3 Menlo-Atherton (21-1) moved into the Division I semifinals with a 12-6 win over No. 6 Stevenson. The Bears will face rival and No. 2 Sacred Heart Prep (16-6) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
SHP advanced to the final four with as the Gators cruised past No. 7 Bellarmine, 21-5.
Serra (10-9), the No. 8 seed, fell to top-seeded St. Ignatius (19-2), 18-4.
In Division II, sixth-seeded Carlmont (11-8) saw its season end with a 14-8 loss to No. 3 Live Oak (11-4).
GIRLS’ LACROSSE

The Menlo girls’ lacrosse team used a second-half charge to soundly defeat visiting Menlo-Atherton 20-12 in the CCS Division I quarterfinals at home Friday evening.
The third-seeded Knights (13-5) move on to play No. 2 seed Sacred Heart Prep (17-2) on the road Wednesday. The Gators advanced with a 19-1 win over No. 7 Los Gatos (13-5).
Menlo trailed the sixth-seeded Bears (6-11) 4-3 after the first period. Down 10-9 with 3:30 left in the third, sophomore Marin Yamada scored to tie the game. Senior Kylie Jones scored a minute later to again tie the game.
In the span of just over two minutes, Elia Choe scored on an assist from fellow sophomore Maren Mulloy to take the lead 12-11. Juniors Ari Kaufman adds another with Ellie Knoll assisting and Jones scores on a Yamada feed. Then Yamada scores on a penalty shot and Menlo led 15-11 and never looked back.
In Division II play, one of the semifinals will be an all-WBAL affair as No. 6 Burlingame (9-7) will make the short drive up Interstate 280 to take on No. 2 Woodside (13-3) at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The Panthers upset No. 3 Scotts Valley (11-3), 13-10, while Woodside cruised past No. 7 Live Oak (14-2), 16-6.
Sequoia (12-5), seeded No. 5, gives the WBAL three teams in the final four as the Ravens knocked off No. 4 Los Altos (9-7), 18-11.
The Ravens will be on the road at top-seeded Gunn (15-3) at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Titans got past No. 8 Castilleja (16-4), 14-11.
