Yianni Fitzgerald, San Mateo football. The senior running back still doesn’t see a lot of carries, but he had his best game of the season in the Bearcats’ 31-14 win over Palo Alto. He carried the ball just seven times — but rushed for a season-high 121 yards and a score. He averaged 17 yards per carry as San Mateo improved to 3-1 on the season.
Sophie Zlobinsky, Hillsdale girls’ water polo. The Lady Knights stormed to a 3-0 start in PAL Ocean Division play last week, earning wins of 20-4 over Mercy-Burlingame; 18-3 over Notre Dame-Belmont; and 25-5 over Capuchino. Zlobinsky starred in the league opener against Mercy, matching her season-high with eight goals. The freshman has scored eight goals in a game twice this season, and is averaging 4.9 goals per game through eight contests.
Samantha Tow, Carlmont flag football. A junior, Tow did a little bit of everything in the Scots’ 57-6 win over Woodside. Tow first had a 25-yard punt return to set up a score; she caught a 24-yard touchdown pass on a go route down the left sideline and then returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns as the Scots scored five TDs on six picks on the day.
Emily Li, Celena Gao and Elise Chen, Menlo School girls’ tennis. The Knights made a statement that they are among the best in the state as they captured the Point Loma Invitational tournament in San Diego. Li, Gao and Chen all went a perfect 4-0 in their singles matches as Menlo became the first team from Northern California to win the title.
Chuck Wynn, Menlo School football. The senior running back had a big day in just one half of play during the Knights’ 48-10 win over Mountain View. He rushed for a team-high 60 yards on nine carries. He also led the team in receptions with five catches for 49 yards, including a 21-yard score. He finished with 109 yards of total offense and made three tackles on kickoffs.
Mia Lo, Aragon girls’ tennis. The freshman No. 1 singles players is already in the running for the Peninsula Athletic League’s individual singles title as she improved to 4-0 to start her high school career. She has long only one game over those four matches, winning 6-0, 6-1 over Menlo-Atherton last Thursday. In her match against Half Moon Bay Tuesday, Lo won at love.
Brian Lourenco, Kosta Jada and Leo Wasmuth, Mills football. The Vikings picked up their win of the season, 27-6 over Harbor-Santa Cruz, with the passing game leading the way. Lourenco, a sophomore quarterback destroyed Harbor through the air. He completed 17 of 23 passes for 259 yards, with three touchdowns. Jada and Wasmuth, both receivers, were the recipients of Lourenco’s night. Wasmuth caught six passes for a whopping 133 yards, averaging 22 yards per catch and grabbed two touchdowns. Jada led the Vikings with eight catches, finishing with 114 yards and the other score pass from Lourenco.
Evan Chopra, Menlo-Atherton boys’ cross country. The junior set a program record on one of the biggest stages in high school cross country, running to 12th place in the three-mile Rated Race at the 44th Annual Woodbridge Invitational. Chopra set the M-A mark with a time of 14 minutes, 41.2 seconds, while leading the Bears to a fourth-place in the team element of the event. M-A senior Cason Mitchell was right on Chopra’s heels, taking 13th place with a time of 14:43.1.
Devon Jackson and Anthony Howell, South City football. The duo fronted the Warriors’ offense to get on the board with two late touchdowns in a 14-9 non-league win over Sequoia. South City trailed 9-0 until midway through the fourth quarter before Jackson scored two touchdowns, a 5-yard run with 7:05 to go, and a go-ahead 2-yard run with just over a minute to play. Howell quarterbacked the game-winning drive by showing a lot of guts, legging 15 yards on third-and-9 to pick up a first down; hitting a 23-yard pass on second-and-long; then using an 18-yard run to take it into the red zone.
Kiley McGibben, Sacred Heart Prep volleyball. The Gators cruised to their seventh straight victory to open the season last Thursday with a sweep of Notre Dame-Belmont. McGibben drove the offense with 25 assists, as the junior setter recorded a double-double by adding a team-high 12 digs.
Kiernan Hogan, Sacred Heart Prep boys’ water polo. The junior has become the Gators’ offensive focal point this season and she lived up to that billing as she helped lead SHP to the championship at the St. Francis Autumn Invite Mountain View over the weekend. The Gators went 4-0 in capturing the title, with Hogan combining for 10 goals and 12 assists.
Sasha Bamdad, Sacred Heart Prep football. The Gators installed a new screen pass prior to Saturday’s matchup with the King’s Academy, and Bamdad made it his own by using the short pass to break a 48-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Nico Pollioni with just over five minutes to play in what proved to be the game-winner in a 22-19 Gators victory. Not only did Bamdad break one tackle behind the line of scrimmage, he ran across the field and broke two more to reach to opposite sideline and storm into the east end zone at Gator Nation Field for the score. Bamdad touched the ball just three times on the day, including two previous rushes that went nowhere, making his game-winning catch the senior’s only reception on the day.
