Clay Carrington, Gates Gamble and Oliver Marcin, Sacred Heart Prep boys’ water polo. The Gators’ “Big Three” lived up the moniker as the trio helped SHP to its fourth straight Northern California Division I championship. During a three-game stretch, during which the Gators scored 36 goals, the trio accounted for 30 of them. Gamble led the way with 11 goals, including the game-tying and game-winning goals in the final minutes their 11-10 win over Miramonte in the championship match. Marcin added 10 goals, including six in an opening-round, 16-10 win over San Ramon Valley. Carrington netted hat tricks in all three matches to finish with nine goals.
Teddy Dacey and Matei Tau, Menlo-Atherton football. Dacey, a senior quarterback, and Tau, a senior defensive back, each made their presence felt both sides of the ball in a 36-14 win over Sacred Heart Prep in a CCS Division III semifinal game. On offense, Dacey was on fire. He completed 13 of 18 passes for 231 yards and touchdown passes of 24 yards (Daniel Jackson), 19 yards (Lucca Keighery) and 13 yards (Matthew Kwon). Meanwhile, Tau came up with two of the biggest defensive plays of the game. Two plays after Kwon’s touchdown, Tau scooped up a fumble and returned it 30 yards to the SHP 25. He then iced the game with his second fumble recovery, with a scoop-and-score of 70 yards.
Joey Donati, Terra Nova football. The senior quarterback wrapped up his high school career with another strong dual-threat performance in the Tigers’ 27-19 loss to Sobrato in a CCS Division V semifinal game. Donati threw for 182 yards and a score, while adding 85 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 17 carries. For the season, Donati finished one yard shy of 2,400 combined yards. He threw for 1,673 yards and rushed for 726, accounting for 32 touchdowns.
Paxton Holden, Half Moon Bay football. The sophomore quarterback had one his best nights throwing the ball, but it wasn’t enough as the Cougars’ season ended with a 56-45 loss Branham in a CCS Division IV semifinal game. Holden completed 10 of 20 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns. He also added a third score on an 8-yard run.
TJ Johnson, San Mateo football. The Bearcats rallied back in the CCS Division III semifinals after falling behind with less than three minutes to play against Live Oak. And while junior quarterback Lukas Fitzgerald capped a banner day of 20 carries for 112 rushing yards with the game-winning score, it was Johnson who set it up by breaking a 64-yard run across midfield to Live Oak’s 2-yard line. The sophomore finished with three carries for 103 yards.
Katalina Tuipulotu, Sequoia volleyball. The Ravens made school history simply by stepping onto the court for the CIF Northern California regional playoffs, as no Sequoia team in any sport had previously qualified for a Nor Cal tournament. Not only did the Ravens qualify, they won three straight five-setters to battle their way to the CIF Division III regional title. While many a Raven showed star qualities at their given positions — from the attacking of outside hitter Kiera Winters, to the blocking of middle Samantha McMurtry, the sterling defense of libero Joslin Fiel, and the spectacular pace set by setter Jayda McGlennon, among others — Tuipulotu did it all, by recording three straight double-doubles through regional play, and even finished the year with another double-double in the CIF state championship loss Saturday to Our Lady of Peace-San Diego.
