Jesse Martinez, Terra Nova baseball. The junior pitcher put together his best outing of the season and was one walk away from a perfect game. Instead, he settled for an eight-strikeout no-hitter in a 3-0 win over Mills. Offensively, he went 1 for 3 with an RBI triple.
Sophia Achterkirchen, Woodside girls’ swimming. Swimmers are starting to gear up for the postseason and Achterkirchen looks to be peaking at the right time. In a dual meet with Carlmont, Achterkirchen sliced a whopping five seconds off her 200 free time, swimming under 2 minutes for the first time this season in posting a CCS-qualifying time of 1:57.06.
Wilson Morales, San Mateo baseball. Morales, a sophomore, was just two walks away from a perfecto. But he struck out nine as he fired a no-hitter in a 6-0 non-league win over Design Tech. Morales also drove in a run against the Dragons to help his cause.
Diego Carranza, South City baseball. The junior helped snapped a 10-game losing streak against PAL teams during the Warriors’ 9-4 win over Half Moon Bay. Carranza went 3 for 4 at the plate and drove in a a team-high three runs.
Alice Han, San Mateo softball. The sophomore continues her outstanding season as she went 2 for 4 with two doubles and drove in five runs as the Bearcats buried the defending PAL Bay Division champs, Capuchino, 13-2.
Lucas Rowe, Carlmont boys’ tennis. The Scots’ No. 1 singles player was in a position he had never been in before this season — playing from behind. Taking on Burlingame Kaden Lam in the finals of the PAL CCS play-in team tennis tournament, Lam handed Rowe his first set loss of season, 5-7. Rowe, however, responded like a champion. He blizted Lam in the second set, winning at love, and then dominated the super tiebreaker third set, improving to 14-0 on the season with a 5-7, 6-0, 10-2 win. Rowe is the No. 1 seed in the PAL singles tournament this week.
Marcus Kim, San Mateo boys’ volleyball. The senior outside hitter helped lead the Bearcats to their first PAL Bay Division win of the season. He finished with a match-high 20 kills in a 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-18 win over archrival Burlingame.
Emma Kim, Menlo School girls’ swimming. The freshman won the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle. races, and swam a leg on the winning 200 medley and 400 free relay in a dual meet at Sacred Heart Prep.
