Half Moon Bay suffered its first loss of the Little League All-Stars Juniors season, falling 3-2 to Sunnyvale in the Northern California baseball tournament opener Saturday at Turlock High School.
Trailing 3-1 in the sixth, HMB had a golden opportunity to break through, loading the bases with one out. Kayden Castaneda sparked a one-out rally with a single to right, Luke Gordon drew a walk, and Aiden Keates reached on an infield error to load the bases. Castaneda then dashed home on a pickoff throw to third, with Gordon, representing the tying run, moving to third.
But Sunnyvale starting pitcher Gabe Gaul slammed the door, inducing an infield popup and a groundout to first baseman Russell Tang to end the threat.
Gaul went the distance, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits through seven innings. He used 90 pitches, 59 for strikes. HMB starting pitcher Ollie Kern allowed three runs (none earned) on five hits through 2 2/3 innings to take the loss. Keates and Brayden Davis followed with 3 1/3 combined innings of scoreless relief.
