The fifth-seeded Colts punched their ticket to the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) final four after eliminating Fresno in penalty kicks in Redwood City Saturday afternoon.
The two teams that qualified for the Northern California final, along with Southern California finalists Los Angeles and Cerritos, will meet at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo next weekend to crown the state champion.
It is the second year in a row that Cañada (14-2-6) advanced to the state championship tournament, falling 2-1 to eventual state champ Cuyamaca last season.
Saturday was the second time in three games the Colts needed penalty kicks to advance. Cañada goalkeeper Luis Evangelista, a sophomore out of Half Moon Bay, kept his clean sheet streak intact as he posted his third straight shutout. Both the Colts and Fresno (12-4-8) were scoreless after 90 minutes of regulation and 20 more minutes of extra time before Cañada prevailed 4-3 in the shootout.
The Colts won their second-round game 4-3 in penalty kicks over Feather River.

CSM volleyball eliminated
The Lady Bulldogs volleyball team, on the other hand, saw its season come to an end as No. 6 CSM (23-6) was beaten by No. 3 Feather River (34-1) in four sets in a Nor Cal quarterfinal matchup in Quincy Saturday evening.
The semifinalists from both the North and South regional advance to the state championship tournament at Folsom Lake College Dec. 5-7.
CSM got off to a strong start, winning the first set 27-25, but the Golden Eagles rebounded to win the next three 25-11, 25-17, 25-20.
The loss snapped the Bulldogs’ 15-match winning streak, which included a perfect 10-0 run to the Coast South Conference title and a five-set win over No. 11 Sacramento in a second-round match last Tuesday.
