Megan Grant was crowned the NCAA Division I single-season home run queen during her senior season at UCLA. Now, the left-handed hitting slugger is pacing the Athletes Unlimited Softball League in her rookie season with the Portland Cascade.
Megan Grant
Grant launched her eighth home run of the season Sunday in the Cascade’s 5-4 win over the Chicago Bandits. The two-run shot to center field moved her into a tie for the league lead Oklahoma City’s Maya Brady. Grant has now hit 50 home runs this year, including an NCAA Division I single-season record 42 at UCLA.
Not only are Grant and Brady former UCLA teammates, they both have San Mateo ties. Grant is a 2022 graduate of Aragon High School, while Brady is the niece of Serra football legend Tom Brady.
Through her first 20 pro games, Grant is slashing .255/.406/.727 while moving around the diamond on defense, having played first base, third base and corner outfield.
The Cascade have four games remaining on their regular-season schedule, which wraps up this Saturday. The postseason begins Thursday, July 23. The top three finishers in the six-team league advance to the playoffs, with the second- and third-place teams facing each other in a one-game playoff for the right to play in the best-of-three championship series.
The Utah Talons (14-7), currently in first place, have already clinched a playoff spot. The Bandits (13-8) are in second place with Grant’s Cascade (12-9) in third. The Oklahoma City Spark (9-11) and Carolina Blaze (8-11) are still mathematically alive in the playoff chase.
