LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Along with a new coach, there will be more change at Liverpool ahead of the Premier League season as Michael Edwards departs as owner Fenway Sports Group's CEO of Football.
FSG said Friday that Edwards will leave his second spell overseeing the club “prior to the start of Liverpool FC’s preseason preparations.”
That means he won't be around as new coach Andoni Iraola leads the team into the season after Arne Slot's firing. Slot who was hired in 2024, shortly after Edwards took the job with FSG, and won the Premier League title in his first season.
“Edwards’ departure marks the culmination of a planned transition following the completion of key strategic priorities,” FSG said.
Edwards was a key figure for Liverpool as the club's sporting director from 2016 through 2022. When he returned in 2024, his new title with FSG reflected its ambitions to build a multi-club ownership group.
Two years on, FSG has not done so, and multiple reports earlier this year said it was moving away from those plans.
“When I returned, I was excited not only by the opportunity to help guide Liverpool through an important period of transition, but also by the chance to help shape FSG’s wider football ambitions," Edwards said in a statement.
“While that broader project ultimately evolved differently to how we had originally envisaged, I am proud of the work our team undertook in presenting ownership with a broad range of thoughtful and well-developed options for the future.”
Liverpool was fifth in the Premier League last season as a troubled title defense ended with the club 25 points off champion Arsenal.
