Josh Bowie, who served as Woodside’s head coach during the 2012 and 2013 seasons, was named the new head football coach at Menlo School.
Bowie will replace Mark Newton, who stepped down after 14 seasons following the Knights’ Central Coast Section Division V championship game appearance this past season.
“What struck the committee most about Josh is his passion for helping students grow and continuing to build a culture in which they can thrive,” Joe McDonald, the school’s interim Director of Athletics, said in a press release.
Bowie has spent most of his football coaching career on the Peninsula. After graduating Woodside in 1998, Bowie became a frosh-soph assistant at Capuchino. He was Woodside’s defensive coordinator under former head coach Steve Nicolopolous from 2007 to 2009. He moved on to work under Pete Lavorato at Sacred Heart Prep in 2010 and 2011 before returning to his alma mater to take over the program. In two years guiding the Wildcats, Bowie compiled an overall record of 6-14 and a Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division mark of 4-6, including a 3-2 record division record in 2013.
After stepping down as head coach following the 2013 season and being replaced by current Woodside coach Justin Andrews, Bowie stayed on as Andrews’ offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for the last three seasons.
“In looking at Menlo School, it became evident that Menlo’s culture and my values are in total alignment,” Bowie said in the press release. “I believe that everyone is capable of bringing their best versions of themselves, every day, to all things.”
Bowie will be taking over a Menlo program that Newton turned into a small-school power. In his 14 seasons, Newton compiled an overall record of 101-59 and made 10 Central Coast Section appearances, including four finals appearances. In PAL play, Newton went 44-34 and won three Ocean Division titles.
Newton decided to step down as head coach to spend more time with his family and pursue other avenues in education.
