Gaza and Ukraine, what to do? Ukraine is looking at the Russian proposal for a cease-fire and a Ukrainian withdrawal from the contested areas claimed by Russia as well as a “no” to NATO membership. Sounds unreasonable? Please compare that to what was on offer three years back — that being the Minsk II agreement where the now-destroyed areas would have still been under Ukrainian control but with an autonomous governing structure, no NATO membership and no destruction and loss of life that we see now. Not a bad trade off if that road was the one taken. In Gaza, the Hamas proposal of withdrawal of all Israeli forces, a permanent cease-fire along with hostage exchanges is the option on offer. Will this be ignored as well? Lots to ponder here.
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Caggiano. I’d recommend Israel reject the Hamas proposal – what’s in it for Israel? But what’s your take on Hamas’ proposal? Should Israel accept, and why? As for Ukraine, Ukraine may soon not have a choice.
Russia has almost never kept a truce agreement unless it was faced with stronger military forces. A truce would just give Russia time to rebuild its forces which have serious supply and moral problems. The only thing that will stop Russian aggression in Ukraine is for NATO and the US military to supply Ukraine with superior ground and air weapons. The war is very unpopular in Russia and military age men are fleeing or hiding from being conscripted. Ukraine is in a war of attrition which generally favors a well armed defender.
