President-elect Trump recently expressed his intention to end daylight saving time. He doesn’t want to change the clocks twice a year anymore. He also said he prefers year-round daylight saving time instead of standard time. For us, that means year round PDT instead of PST.
In San Mateo, these would be the PDT sunrise times for the four months of November through February. The times are from the United States Naval Observatory website. Nov. 1: 7:35 a.m.; Nov. 25: 8 a.m.; Dec. 29: 8:24 a.m. (latest sunrise); Feb.14: 8 a.m.; and Feb. 28: 7:42 a.m.
As you can see, the sun comes up mighty late and we’d have a very dark morning commute. Compare these sunrise times with the start times for schools. Currently, we change the clocks in November and March to avoid this.
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Daane, but I was under the impression Trump wants to end daylight savings time to have the year-round standard time that you prefer. Regardless, I’m sure many folks don’t care which time is used as long as we rid ourselves of changing the clock twice a year. I’m sure folks will adapt just fine, at least better than changing the clock twice a year, as daylight savings/time change studies report.
You forgot to do summer, where the sun rises as early as 5:47 currently. With permanent Standard time that would be 4:47, which would mean it would start getting light before 4:30 a.m. This is wasted light as people don't use this time before work/school/camp etc. to do outdoor activities and stores and businesses are not open.
If I were forced to chose I would pick permanent DST since I love the light in the evenings (especially important for kids in school to have more time in the afternoons for outdoor sports and exercise.) But I also understand your arguments about commuting to school and work in the dark. So I've landed on Team Keep the Time Change. Annoying for a few days but I think it works well for all.

Totally agree with you. Heath experts say it’s better for you too.
