I am writing in support of Dr. Charles Hanson’s promotion of the King Center as an important resource for San Mateo’s culturally and economically diverse population in North Central. Where else in the neighborhood can people go to access needed social, educational and health services, as well as meet friends, play sports/games or simply sit in the park under a tree?
North Central is, as Hansen notes, a “historically Black, Latino and immigrant community that has faced disinvestment for generations.” And life for many of our neighbors there has only gotten worse with the threats of ICE, increased rent, unemployment and food insecurity through the recent withholding of SNAP benefits.
I urge San Mateo to help the King Center. The cost now will be paid back tenfold through savings in people’s futures and future community services.
