In “Another community event needed,” letter writer Dave Cohen recounted that one advocate for increased bicycle structure Mike Swire touted the MTC’s “Bike to Anywhere” bike ride event where local elected officials participated to experience the obstacles bicyclists face.
Dave’s suggestion that a similar event in San Mateo’s North Central neighborhood take place — that is, to “provide the politicians with wheelchairs, walkers and canes, or a couple of simulated infants and toddlers, along with bags of groceries to use — while trekking to and from where there aren’t parking-exclusionary bike lanes.
Piggybacking on Dave’s suggestion — my suggestion would be to stage an event with the above for renters without provided stall space who can’t find parking.
When a certain number of renters do not have a parking space, they will be competing with those with two cars for street parking. While walking is good exercise and certainly recommended, I can’t imagine the level of frustration of weekly grocery shopping and having to park three to four blocks away.
The eight-story development proposed at the former Kelly Moore site at 616 S. B St., downtown San Mateo, calls for 94 rental units and 114 parking spaces. While the city’s zoning updates in recent years, particularly Measure T increased height and density limits in certain areas, my question is: What is the bare minimum requirement for parking spaces? Gateway provided .7 and Kelly Moore 1.10.
