Editor,
So the BART Millbrae station hasn’t lived up to expectations. How could it?
BART gives Millbrae, and adjacent 53 million San Francisco International Airport passengers, its system-worst train frequency (15 minutes). Yet it rams five-minute system-best service into its system-worst-performing station: 12 million passengers from Oakland International Airport. That’s an upside-down business plan.
BART also leaves its valuable three-minute connection track between Millbrae/Caltrain and the airport empty all day Monday through Friday, letting the brave endure up to 36-minute passages instead.
The solution: on each trip between San Francisco and Millbrae, stop at SFO; extend every SFO-San Francisco train to Millbrae. The result would be 7.5-minute service to each station, good connections to/from Caltrain and an increase in riders. Very few airports around the world have such infrequent service to their central cities as SFO currently does.
No construction, additional equipment or new personnel would be needed.
